It is the largest lake of southern Italy (60.5 square kilometers). It has a squared shape, and it is separated from the sea by a sand bar 10 Km long. Near the beach, you will admire a thick pine-, eucalyptus- and mastic-forest, which are quite typical of these lands.
Cave of St. Michele
A popular tradition tells that the Angel Michele appeared, for the first time, on this promontory.
Some water drips from the vault of the cave, and is then collected in special containers: one of these is dedicated to Saint Lucia, while along its walls, which are about fifty meters long, you can see the mark of a wing ascribed to the Angel.
Inside, apart from the main altar with the statue of the Archangel, there are also two minor altars dedicated to St. Raffaele and the SS. Annunziata.
Cathedral Church St. Maria della Pietà
It is a Latin cross layout church, with baroque style. Inside are the statues of St. Peter and Paul; in the left aisle you will see of a eighteenth-century-bust depicting the Addolorata and the statue of St. Maria Maggiore, in the right aisle you can admire the ancient wooden statues of St. Michael the Archangel and Assunta.
Hydro station of St. Nicola Imbuti
The remains of the Hydro station of St. Nicola Imbuti are also an interesting thing to see: it is actually a military facility near the ruins of the old cloister of San Nicola Imbuti.
