Carpino

Rural village situated on a hill between Lake Varano and Foresta Umbra

Carpino is a small rural village situated on a hill between Lake Varano and Foresta Umbra, at an altitude of  843 meters above sea level and 86 km away from Foggia.

The old town’s narrow streets and delicious food of ancient tradition make it a must for tourists seeking tranquillity in beautiful landscapes.

Carpino's economy is based primarily on agriculture. In particular, one of the most renowned extra virgin olive oil of the area is produced here (not by chance the country is also known as the "oil city").

Not to forget, nonetheless, is the widespread production of vegetables and fruit.

"Tradition" is certainly one good word to describe this territory, over which years and years of history seem to lay upon.

The Cantors, with their tarantellas, are now entrusted with the preservation of the historical and folkloristic heritage of Carpino, maintaining in life the costumes and dances of the past.

Historical Notes

The first historical document that regards Carpino dates back to 1158. There, the existence of a “Castellum Caprelis” (probably coming from the word  deer, or carpani, very popular in the territory) is mentioned for the first time.

The legend narrates that, after the destruction of the old Greek-Roman city Uria, its inhabitants moved to Carpino. The subsequent fortification of the town is due to the Normans, who, fearing an invasion of the Byzantines, built solid walls around the perimeter of the town.

During their dominance of the former, the castle of Carpino was restored and expanded with the intent to secure protection from invaders.
