Lesina

The notoriety of Lesina is mainly due to the homonymous Lake.

This is actually more a lagoon than a real lake, for the presence of communication channels with the sea. In spite of its actual geographical definition, what is certain is that the presence of this stretch of water gives a unique atmosphere to the town of Lesina.

Historical Notes

Some archaeological discoveries prove that the territory of Lesina has been inhabited since the ages of prehistory.

The origin of the name, however, dates back to the Roman period, when it was called Alexina.

In the Middle Ages, the territory of Lesina was part of the larger dukedom of Benevento, held by the Longobards. It was the most important of the 34 counties that comprised the dukedom.

The twentieth century began in a quite turbulent way: in 1911 the citizens of Lesina rose against the mayor for the use of the lake for fishing, which represented their main source of livelihood.

Unfortunately, the revolt was stifled by the militaries and two citizens lost their lives fighting for the rights of all the inhabitants: these were Giuseppe Calà and Domenico Nista.

In addition to these two names, one should mention those of the young Lesinesi, who, during the First and Second World War, lost their lives in the name of their homeland.
