Peschici
Peschici, also known as figliata dalla roccia (engraved in the rock) is one of the most exciting places to visit in Gargano, offering its visitors a friendly hospitality, an amazing culinary tradition and, of course, enchanting places.
Located on a peak in the extreme northern part of Gargano, Peschici dominates the coastline between Rodi Garganico and Vieste.
The city is divided in two parts: the old town, which is still partially encircled by the ancient city walls, and the most recent part, with its bright white houses in the typical Mediterranean style.
The coast shows a great variety of natural landscapes, ranging from sandy to rocky beaches, and the water is always clear and crystal. Peschici is a favourite dive destination, for great variety of fishes and shellfish in these surroundings. .
Historical Notes
The name Peschici has Slavic origins. In fact, after the Saracen invasion, the Emperor Otto I asked for help to the Slavs in order to relieve the territory from the Saracens. The expulsion of the Saracens from the territory occurred towards the end of the 10th century. However, the first document reporting the name of this municipality dates back only to 1053, and is part of Cartolario Tremitese.
The Castle of Peschici, situated in the city centre, was built by the Angevins and restored by the Aragonesi.
The most important building of Peschici from an historical perspective is, without any doubt, the Abbey of Santa Maria di Calena. In 1023, the Abbey was donated by Bishop Leone to the Benedictine Monks of the Tremiti Islands. Throughout the 11th century, the abbey also played an important role to contribute to the economic growth of this community, whose main source of wealth was, and still is, fishery.
