However, Gargano sometimes reveals its origins as of rough, savage promontory, covered by a wild Mediterranean vegetation that might look hostile to humans. Despite this first impressions, this vegetation actually needs to be protected.
On this territory there are, in fact, favourable conditions for the growth of many species of trees and plants.
For this reason, in combinations with the presence of species of animals threatened with extinction, the National Park of Gargano has been founded. This is now is a full-blown biological island, offering many nice surprises to tourist. .
The coast is as harsh as the rest of the territory. The weather and erosion caused by atmospheric and water agents have given rise to numerous caves and holes in the cliffs, which cannot be perceived from the outside but can nonetheless be explored.
The names of these caves are very unique, just as much as the way they look when you’ll visit them. Just to name a few, there are the Grotta dei Pomodori, Grotta Rossa, Grotta sfondata, Grotta delle Rondini, Grotta dei Contrabbandieri – this is the first one ever to be discovered,, offering many nice surprises to tourist. by two fishermen in 1954 - Grotta dei Serpenti and Grotta dei Marmi.
In addition to all of the above, one should not forget to mention the strict relationship between the population of Gargano and the religion, which dates back to immemorial times.
As a matter of fact, this land has been among the first in Italy to accept and practice the Christian religion, deserving the title of Sacred Mountain. There are two main religious centres in Gargano. The first one is Monte Sant' Angelo, renowned for the cult of St. Michele Archangel, which has always attracted a large number of pilgrims since ancient times.
The second one is San Giovanni Rotondo, the town where Padre Pio da Pietralcina lived from 1916 onwards. This saint, who has dedicated his entire life to helping the weak and the sick, also promoted the construction of fundamental public works, such as the House Relief (Casa Sollievo), a hospital.
Among its many beauties, Gargano counts one of the largest Marine Reserves of the world, the Tremiti Islands. This archipelago comprises five small islands located a few miles away from the North coast of Gargano. They can be reached from different places, thanks to motorboats and hydrofoils, where you will always find well-prepared tourist guides.
Among the most charming places on the coast, we suggest you to visit Mattinata, Vieste, Rodi Garganico and Peschici. If you visit the north of Gargano, you certainly have to stop in Lesina, which has a beautiful lagoon linked to the sea through two main channels.
In the hinterland, in addition to San Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Sant'Angelo, there are also Ischitella, Vico del Gargano, Carpino and Cagnano Varano.
This itinerary could be expanded infinitely, but there is no need to since we are certain that any of these places will offer the most demanding tourists a unique charm, that should be experienced at least once in life!
