Touristic Routes Vico Del Gargano
Church of the Carmine
It was built around the second half of the seventeenth century, and was supposed to replace the old Convent of the Carmelite order, which had been destroyed in those years.
The Church is noticeable for its special facade: in fact, it comprises the bell tower, usually adjacent to the Church. Furthermore, the main door has an important stone bas-relief on it, depicting three mountains surmounted by a cross, which is symbol of the Casa madre Tremitense.
Church of the Mercy (Chiesa della Misericordia)
1626, the date stated on the main door of the church, does not suggest the year of building of the church. It refers instead to a subsequent restoration intervention, wanted by the Brotherhood devoted to St. Maria of the Mercy. The organ-piano inside the church, which dates back to 1861, is a very interesting architectural part of the church itself.
Church of St. Giuseppe
The Church comprises an imposing nave, which seems to cling to a small aisle. Inside you can admire a beautiful wooden statue depicting the Dead Christ.
Church of St. Marco
A convention dating back to the year 1607 tells that the Church was built by a foreign population coming from Dalmatia. Inside the church there are two wonderful altars, respectively depicting the Madonna delle Grazie and St. Marco.
Church of St. Maria Pura
The church, dating back to the seventeenth century, is located near a river from which the Asciatizzi, which is one of the only perpetual flows of Gargano, originates.
Church of St. Maria degli Angeli
On the churchyard of the church is a majestic, beautiful oak-old. This is a rare specimen belonging to the ancient forest of Gargano, that once occupied the whole territory of Vico.
Church of St. Pietro
The discovery of some historical maps proves that this church already existed at the time of the Normans. By the end of the eighteenth century, the church had been turned into the headquarters of the cemetery of Vico del Gargano. After those of Pisa and Naples, the cemetery of Vico del Gargano was the third one to be built in Italy outside the city walls.
The Castle
The building of the castle is due to the Normans. It was, however, Frederick II of Swabia to enlarge the original fortress, giving it its final appearance. Currently, the castle is one of the main artistic emergencies of Vico del Gargano: despite its tumbledown appearance, it is full of historical memory, which, however, could not be handed down to us through written sources. daily and leads to the island of San Domino.
